These days, just about everyone says they do user experience (UX). Of course, there’s a problem with these abundant claims of UX expertise: Very few firms actually practice what they preach. They talk about usability, but have never done a single user test. They pay lip service to user-centered design, but never actually talk to users. These are the UX pretenders. They brazenly parrot the latest digital trends in hopes of winning your business.

What would a UX glossary look like for firms of this sort? We imagine it would be simultaneously funny and cringeworthy, a bit like watching an episode of The Office (BBC version).

So we decided to write it.

We’ve created the world’s first ironic UX glossary. Think of it as an offbeat public service announcement, a what-not-to-do. If your agency, web design firm, web app consultant, or UX team believes any of the things on the following list, run.

A case study was commissioned to review the impact of user experience (UX) design in a galaxy far, far away. This appears to be a period full of technological wonder with faster-than-light space travel, advanced life-saving technology as well as advanced weaponry.

However, systematic design mistakes also proliferate. For example, pressure (literally choking pressure around the neck) from superiors to complete projects on time have caused workers to miss catastrophic failure modes. Flaws include obvious vulnerabilities such as allowing large star-ships to breach security inside a space station and destroy it.

To limit the scope of the analysis, only smaller-scale interactive elements are examined along with their impact on the human and alien factors. All issues discovered are true, from a certain point of view.

In cooperation with the Traffic Police Administration of the Serbian Interior Ministry and the Serbian Traffic Safety Committee, Telekom Srbija has launched a campaign entitled Park Your Phone When Driving! which is aimed at altering drivers' attitude i.e. raising drivers' awareness of the dangers of using cell phones when driving and increasing the level of traffic safety on the road.

This is a great example to illustrate many of the motivators that you can implement in a gamification layer.

A group of pubs in Ireland wanted to drum up some business so they created a short term event called the 12 Pubs of Christmas. Since this is short term, it is OK to have extrinsic rewards. But they have a combination of all types. And I added a few of my own to round it out for some player profiles that seemed left out.
